designing with confidence blog

The trend today is to have outdoor living spaces that has more than one function.  Here, I will give you some ideas for outdoor living, so you can create your own outdoor living space in style.

out door living spaces
This is my enclosed courtyard where I have created seating for 24, because I like to entertain many people at one time. The chair seats are a white vinyl fabric, which allows me to use any color I chose for the table settings, but still keeping in mind the colors used in the house.  Remember, bringing the inside out theory!

interesting with a few touches.
courtyard table
This is a wrought iron side table that I turned into a serving table for the porch.  To give it interest, I purchased old silver plated pieces and attached them to the table with stainless steel screws. The silver does wear off with the weather, but it still as a nice patina. WINK WINK!  Yes, I do keep it out all year long.

Make a list of how you want your outdoor living space to work for your needs. If  you want a place for lazy afternoons than a cushion chaise would work for your needs.  What about creating sleeping quarters with a daybed that doubles as a sofa. Think about storage for cushions, blankets for cool evenings, or burbling fountains for that calming sound of water.

courtyard seating
I used pottery glazed garden stools at one of my tables, to add a little interest to the seating.  As long as your pottery is glazed, it will be fine setting in the snow all winter.  I tested the seats out to make sure they were comfortable for guest.

The square garden stool makes a good table for drinks next to seating. I usually don’t use cushions on my chaises, because I like the over-size pillows to be the accent. It still is a very comfortable seating.  I hot glued the seashells on top of the lanterns for interest.

Outdoor furniture can be as big an investment as the furniture inside the house.  So let’s look at some of the choices available for outdoor living spaces.

  • Iron furniture from wrought steel or cast steel is a good choice for windy areas but it rust and may need more upkeep if not under cover.  Unfortunately, my furniture is iron and I battle rust every year.
  • Aluminum furniture is moderately lightweight and the plus is it is rust proof. Cast aluminum pieces are more expensive but they will out perform the iron furniture.
  • Wood furniture will need to be painted or vanished every year, when exposed to the weather.
  • Wicker furniture would need to be under a roof to protect it from rainy weather.  There are a lot of synthetic all-weather wicker on the market that can take the weather.

Stripes are always good for porches, because they don’t make the area feel too busy.

Cushions can be very expensive, if you do not take care, in selecting waterproof and mildew-resistant fabric covers; covers and fillings must allow water to drain.

I usually put photos on my screen porch. They just make me smile! Metal or wooden picture frames work well for those areas.  I also seal the back with tape to keep the moisture out. WINK WINK!
