8 Tips for Picking Paint Colors

letstalkDid you know that 80 per cent of our response to an object or a room has to do with COLOR?  Then,  picking paint colors in your home will be very important task to get right.

That is why we usually label this response “color psychology”.  I believe the importance of color is often underestimated in many areas of our life.  Let’s take a look at some ways for you to pick paint colors that will make your rooms special.

green and white bedding
A client used her favorite bedding to make a statement.  This room makes me smile. Wink!  The woodwork has a high gloss to match the shine on the wallpaper.

Tip 1  Select a favorite color from something that you want to use in the room, such as, dishes, rug, accessory or maybe a piece of furniture.  Using this as your main color will give you a huge start.  Keep in mind that the  color could be your accent color, which could be the accessories used in the room.  Here the accessories could be removed and then adding accessories of a different color would change the whole look.

TIP 2  If you are not confident about a color, test it on a poster board or a paper plate.  If using the wall to test, make sure that the paint is not applied to thick because this could cause a change in color when the final selection goes on the wall.

The grays seem to be the color of the day. If gray is your neutral then it will always be around for you.  I happen to be one of those beige people! WINK WINK

TIP 3  Picking the right colors will also create a certain mood.  Do you want a restful and quiet room or a dramatic room?  Cool colors will create a quieter feeling.  Stronger colors have a more drama associated with them.

TIP 4  When creating a cohesive look with paint in your rooms, try varying the finishes.  When painting the walls and trim the same color, consider making one satin and the other semi-gloss.  This will add a little interest.

TIP 5  Check how a rooms color interact with the adjacent room.  When you are in one room, remember to check how the next room relates.  The color must flow from room to room.  That is one of our Wink’s!

TIP 6 Ceilings that are painted a color can add high drama. (I have to throw in the fact that wallpaper, such as, a lattice can be a show stopper in certain rooms.)  Today many people are using paint to paint designs on the ceiling.  One of my favorite is to stripe the ceiling.

TIP 7 Notice the lighting in the room.  It may be the thing that most people do not have a clue as to how this is one thing could be working against their colors. Here are 3 types of lighting that we are exposed to every day of our life.

*Natural daylight shows the truest color

* Incandescent lighting brings out warm tones and yellows.  (This is a killer for decorators.  They will have clients that change their bulbs without a thought of how walls of the room will take on another look. An example would be the color red.  The incandescent will take the red toward an orange-red.

*Fluorescent will make the colors more blue.  Again, using the color red, it will look more wine or burgundy. (I keep low wattage bulbs in the drawer to use when I am having guest over for the evening. Wink)

TIP 8  Children’s rooms are very important to set the right mood for them.  Be careful not to overstimulated with bright intense colors.  Some brighter colors can lead to unrest and irritability.  You need to judge your child’s moods before settling on colors.

The feng shui playbook strongly advises against painting your kitchen a vivid orange.  “In feng shui terms, orange increases ones’ appetite, so unless you want to get fat, stay away from orange”.  By the way, orange is my favorite color.  Can you tell?   Wink Wink

Speaking of feng shui, I found these napkins while shopping.  I bought every package I could get my hands on to share with some of my clients.  Yes, we have had a lot of laughs!  Are you laughing yet?
