Four Mistakes when Selecting Furniture for the Home
I want to share with you four big mistakes when selecting furniture for the home. While we can’t always be perfect, we can take the time to think through our purchases. Mainly because those mistakes can be very costly. The same principles we use to decorate our homes are also used when we shop for clothing. If you go back and take a look at some previous blogs you will see how I related decorating our body to decorating the home. Both carry the theme of creating your “unique” style.
An online survey of Houzz find that only 29% of women consider their significant other’s taste when making design decisions compared with 43% of men who consider their significant other.
Four big mistakes people make when decorating their home
- Selecting furniture that looks-Fabulous, but feels-uncomfortable
- Selecting furniture that is overly trendy
- Selecting furniture that has no purpose for your life style
- Selecting furniture that doesn’t have a fabric suitable for your needs
No 1 Selecting furniture that looks-fabulous, but feels-uncomfortable
I think we all are guilty of this one when selecting furniture for the home! It is like the stiletto heel: beautiful but oh-so-impractical. One way to help you not to impulse buy is to take a picture and contemplate it for a while. The old pro and con list might help. Remember, if you can’t sit or relax on it, it’s not for you.
No 2 Selecting furniture that is overly trendy
I saw it in a magazine or it was in Kim Kardashian’s living room! Yes, it may have looked amazing in the furniture store, but in your house? Sometimes out of the box pieces are not always out of the question. It is just knowing how to successfully mix pieces when selecting furniture for the home. That’s a hard one. To avoid big mistakes that people make when decorating their home, study magazine pictures to see how different styles are used together. You can always get advice from a decorator or a friend you trust.
This also reminds me of what happens when a new hot trendy color of clothing pops on the market and we think, “Oh, I have to get something in that color!” But is it a color you can wear?
No 3 Selecting furniture that has no purpose for your life style
Let’s say, you see this beautiful oversized breakfast table that takes up a lot of needed floor space only to realize you don’t need it, when you actually never entertain. How about putting a TV in your bedroom when all you want to do at night is to read. The moral of the story when selecting furniture for the home would be to buy for the lifestyle you have, not the one you think you might have one day.
We can translate this mistake to our wardrobe, for instances, when we buy clothing that is to glitzy for our lifestyle.
No 4 Selecting furniture that doesn’t have a fabric suitable for your lifestyle
Another big mistake people make when selecting furniture for their home is decorating their home with delicate fabrics on a chair or sofa that’s going to get a lot of wear. When you do that you might as well throw your money out the window. The cost of upholstering and purchasing new fabric will be as much as buying a new chair today. I tell my clients if they have an upholstered piece that is quality or we need a special designer fabric, then it makes good sense to upholstered.
When thinking about your wardrobe, you can see that those same questions I talked about above relate to your wardrobe decisions. For instances, does cotton clothing work better for your style or would silk be your staple? It is all about making decisions that create our own uniqueness as individuals.
In closing, there are a number of other mistakes that I have observed through the years. I will save those for another post. Stay tune. See ya in 2 weeks. The next blog maybe my BEST ever! WINK!
